We currently have an opportunity for a Relief Porter to join our team at Charing Cross Hospital (W6 8RF). This role has links with the Helpdesk Team so cross-training into this role may be required.
To provide a high-quality Porter service to patients, staff and visitors, to undertake the movement of patients, equipment, documentation, food etc. in an efficient and safe manner
Maintain clean and safe equipment and environment in accordance with the specification and be responsive to service needs as they arise and constantly seek to improve the productivity and quality of the service
Undertake necessary duties to ensure maintenance of an efficient Portering Service as directed by your Supervisor. These duties will be carried out both in patient and non-patient environments
All work must be undertaken in line with health, safety, security and Company and Trust policies and procedures including infection control
When required, you may need to assist with the emergency and evacuation procedures and security situations in accordance with Trust policy
To transfer patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via means of walking, wheelchair, trolley, or beds
The collection and delivery of patients, furniture, air and foam mattresses, linen, medical gases, medical records, x-rays, pharmacy boxes, specimens, blood products, post, clinical and non-clinical waste, medical equipment and supplies, food and any other items, using appropriate methods of work as directed
lection and delivery of deceased patients to the mortuary using appropriate means of transport. Where required, prepare bodies for viewing
Providing a certificate of competence has been obtained from the Trust, use the designated biometric blood tracking system ensuring the blood products are transported in the correct manner e.g. use of cool box for 2 units or more
Attend medical emergencies including cardiac arrests with the resus trolley / bag
Assisting patients to be pat slid across from trolleys to the bed with assistance from the nursing staff
Ensure correct and appropriate use of radio and other communication equipment always in compliance with the local guidelines and procedures
Liaise and communicate with the Helpdesk dispatch unit maintaining professionalism always
Operate in line with task timeframes as per the specification of the contract, avoiding financial penalties
If driving duties are required these must be in accordance with on-site restrictions, speed and statutory regulations.
Ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and safe before, during and after use, and complete relevant documentation within the prescribed frequencies.
Ensure vehicles are kept clean and tidy and are cleaned inside and out
Report any vehicle defects or concerns immediately
In the event of any fire / major accident or incident, man key entrances, check ID badges, assist patients able to walk and assist nursing team with patients unable to walk
Ensure the safe storage and maintenance of appropriate stock, medical gases and supplies, specifically adhering to health and safety regulations around type and size, and ensure that these are available as required within the designated area
Change medical gas cylinders onwards, in departments, and the manifold room, using appropriate methods of work, following appropriate training
Safely transfer Liquid Nitrogen through the designated hospital route
lection and safe removal and, where appropriate, the recording of non-clinical and clinical waste within your area of work, in line with Company procedures and Trust policy
Assist Sodexo and the Trust in running an effective waste recycling and waste minimisation system, including shredding when required
Where required, frank mail in line with postal service guidelines and Company and Trust policies and procedures
To have a flexible approach to working with new innovations and technologies to aid and enhance service delivery
Ensure wheelchairs and trolleys are kept clean and ensure safe practice to minimise the risks of infection to patients and staff in accordance with national and Trust policy, to be aware of their responsibilities as listed in the Infection Control Policy

Ensure the cleanliness of the Recycling area always
tain a clean, neat and tidy appearance, complying with Company and Trust uniform and hand care guidelines and high standards of personal hygiene
Be dressed in the correct uniform always including the wearing of Sodexo name badges and Trust identity cards and to ensure that both are clearly visible always
Report immediately to your line manager and/or other appropriate person any faults or defects to Trust or Company equipment or premises, especially those which could be dangerous.
Report any accidents or near misses to the appropriate manager and complete the appropriate incident/accident report forms.
Use all mechanical and electrical equipment in a correct and safe manner, using appropriate methods of work, following training
Ensure confidentiality, privacy and dignity is maintained always in accordance with the Data Protection Act and in line with Company and Trust policy, where appropriate
Ensure you understand and comply with all relevant current legislation as set out in Company and Trust policies and procedures and the related documentation, including contract of employment, Great! Cards and security procedures.
Provide cover for the area specific porters when required
Work in partnership with Sodexo Managers, Client staff and colleagues
Conduct yourself in a professional manner whilst on Trust and Company premises or public highways
Participate as required, in regular team meetings / working, performance reviews, job chats, return to work discussions and co-operate with accident and other investigations
Engage in the process to identify your own personal development and training needs and attending agreed training programmes
Assist new start inductions on the “buddy” programme
All portering staff will be mindful to give assistance and wherever possible to help with any queries raised by patients, visitors and staff
Any other duties as may be reasonably requested within the grade of the post

Manual Handling - training will be provided
