Overview of project/role
Want to help improve London’s built environment? Have excellent organisational and communication skills? Then joining Urban Design London (UDL) might be the thing for you.
UDL is a not-for-profit training, support and networking organisation helping public sector built environment practitioners to deliver well designed places. We are hosted by TfL, and work with all London local authorities and other influential organisations.
We run a training, networking or design advice events programme, receiving around 4500 bookings from planners, transport planners, highway engineers, architects, landscape architects, councillors, housing professionals etc. Working with us, you will be at the heart of London’s built environment scene, meeting interesting people, hearing new ideas and learning about building projects.
We are looking for people who are self motivated, hard working and like working in a close knit team. You will need to have very good administration and communication skills and really enjoy using them. An interest in urban design and good place making would also be an advantage.
This is an opportunity to join our exciting and fast moving team for 12 months. It is well suited for someone at the start of their career wanting to learn about the built environment. You will have the opportunity to attend all our training and networking events allowing you to learn from and meet lots of architects, urban designers, planners, housing and transport professionals. You will help organise and manage the events, take notes and draft summaries of what was said, providing you with valuable transferable skills.
There will be an opportunity to develop your own piece of work, with previous interns producing UDL Sourcebooks or developing new event series. Mentoring will be available from team members and other UDL partners; you will be able to learn as much as you wish from those around you.
Take an active part in team meetings, discussions and input to the development and delivery of UDL events, publications and other projects
Manage event bookings including communicating with individual delegates when they have inquiries or special requirements, confirming bookings and sending reminder and post event emails
Ensuring event presentations are saved, available and working well for speakers and sent to delegates after events
Manage and maintain UDL’s database including recording attendance records, dealing with unsubscribe and subscribe requests, updating event information and creating reports (e.g. numbers of events per organisation)
Update website information including uploading presentations, news and other materials as available
Take responsibility for event administration including creating and printing materials such as agendas, ensuring rooms are properly set up and IT systems functioning, registering delegates as they arrive, taking notes during the events and tweeting at least once during each event (and liking and retweeting tweets by others relating to the event)
Draft event takeaways summarising the main points made by speakers or delegates. Once signed off by the event manager, upload takeaways to the website and tweet them
With the help of others in the team, devise and carry out a personal project that links to UDL’s purpose
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Recently completed or working towards a degree and professional qualification in planning, highway engineering, architecture, urban design or other built environment role (Essential)
Interest in public sector built environment practices, objectives and organisations (Highly desirable)
Interest in urban design issues including public realm and street design, building design and planning policy and development management (Highly desirable)
Interest in the development and delivery of training and network events including CPD sessions (Highly desirable)
